Sleep - Jerusalem (1998) CD Bootleg

This is the last piece of the Sleep puzzle I needed as far as the Jerusalem/Dopesmoker releases are concerned. This is the bootleg version of the original Jerusalem mix the band released in 1998 with cover art by Arik Roper, who is credited as "Moonhawk" in the insert.

The release is identical as far as I can tell to the later Rise Above/Music Cartel Records release with "Jerusalem" broken up into 6 parts and the same truncated opening to the album on that later release.

This was bought from a small online shop and as far as I know, its pretty hard to find, but doesn't command stupid money - probably because the version is the same as the later Rise Above/Music Cartel one. It's worth it, if only for the awesome art. The Rise Above/Music Cartel version art is OK, even with the tolex of the Matamp/Green amp as the backing color/texture behind the pics.

For those of you wondering which version to get, there are four now - this, the Rise Above/Music Cartel one, the Tee Pee records remixed Dopesmoker release and now the Southern Lord version, which is sceduled to drop in about a months' time. The Tee Pee Records Dopsmoker release is really the one to get right now, but I have yet to hear the new version - which also has an extra track - a live version of "Holy Mountain".

  1. Nice grab. I've been collecting Sleep for quite a while and just stumbled upon your blog. Depending on how you vew the releases, there are quite a few of them. The Jerusalem bootleg, Jerusalem from Rise Above, the Japanese version of Jerusalem from Rise Above/Victor w/ OBI (also a promo version out there), the Tee Pee records version of Dopesmoker, the new Southern Lord version of Dopesmoker, and a Japanese version of the new Southern Lord Dopesmoker on Daymare Recordings. It comes with OBI, Japanese lyrics sheets, and a bonus disc with two live tracks instead of just the 1 that is on the U.S. versions. This is all I have been able to find personally. Awesome bootleg selection. I don't have much to trade, but I'd love to get a few those.

  2. QUA1L - wow - never thought about the JP versions - thanks for the heads up, but I may just stick to the US stuff - :) That JP version of Dopesmoker with the extra track sounds dope though!

  3. Just found this site while looking for the 2014 Denver show... I bought this version of Jerusalem back in the 90s from a cool indie store in Burien, WA, that had this and a great selection of Budgie boots. It's gone now, but I still have the CD. I never bought the green-cover Jerusalem, though I have both versions of Dopesmoker. I like the artwork on this one, and I liked the artist's Nebula cover, too.
